Research- Outfits which inspire me
I love these dresses that Katy Perry and Selena Gomez wear are really beautiful to me and. They look very feminine and sleek but they still have an element of darkness to them. I really like the elegant style with the dark twist. They manage to look like a rock girl also a pop and elegant woman, similar to how I want my magazine to look in the end.

Analysis of Magazine Front cover 2
The most outstanding feature of this magazine to me is the main image due to the fact that Lady Gaga is wearing gloves that don't cover much but are also of a strange shape.
The masthead is white on a read background, in the top quarter and covers around one eighth of the magazine. The font is serif, I would consider using a similar text as a masthead on my own magazine.
There is a total of 10 cover stories on the cover of the magazine. There are various different fonts and sizes of fonts used across the cover. The font style is very sharp much like some of Lady Gaga music. There are banners on this magazine and they look to be transparent. The main colour scheme is grey and white, it looks sleek and modern. I think this colour scheme and main image allows the magazine to appeal to both genders.
I think this image of Lady Gage sometimes agrees with what Richard Dyer said 'that stars are an image not a person'. This is true because the image is shot in a studio however it goes against it because she is not dressing in a way which is unusual for her. She is always unique so this is Lady Gaga being herself.
There are pugs featured in this
magazine as
shown on the left.
I do not see any puffs featured
on this magazine cover. There is no slogan but there is a sell line as shown above.
The magazine looks classy and well made which portrays the true quality of the magazine.
The image relates to the headline because Lady Gaga, she is looking directly into the camera and the photo is a long shot. The photo has been manipulated, it looks sharp and clear, hardly any of the image is covered by the cover lines.
The background is not cluttered but is still in focus, it was shot in a studio, the main image is in colour. Her hair and make up is very dramatic and her outfit is also unusual just like her style of music. There is no free downloads or CD's with this magazine.
I believe this image strongly supports Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze, as Lady Gaga is half naked and this is bound to draw the attention of men.

Analysis of Magazine Front Cover 1
Masthead |
Example of Font |
There is one banner on the top left of the magazine and it is not transparent at all, the pugs are also featured on this banner, they are about country music. I believe the magazine cover appeals more to females than males, due to the sleek looks and the purple and lilac colour themes. There are no puffs, slogans or sell lines featured on the cover of this magazine.
The main image relates to the headline because it is a medium close up shot of Miley Cyrus and the headline reads 'Miley Cyrus'. It was shot in a studio, the model is looking directly into the camera in the main image which covers most of the front cover. The picture has been manipulated to put the masthead behind Miley and to make it look clear and sharp.
Hardly any of the main image is covered by the cover lines, around one sixth. The background is in focus but is plain and not cluttered and all of the cover is in colour. Miley is wearing all black and leather gloves this would appeal to the young people who listen to her because she looks very stylish. Her hair looks fairly natural however her make up is slightly deep and not as natural which is a very modern way of doing make up. There are no free CD's or download with this magazine.
Colours not clashing, looks classy. |
This magazine has not been in-keeping with the usual country genre of Miley this goes against what Hodge and Kress said 'Genres are typical forms of text which links producers, consumers, topic, medium, manner and occasion.'There are several things I like about this magazine cover, for example the layout of it makes it look very classy and modern. The colours go really well together and do not cause any clashes what so ever, I may consider these aspects to include in my own magazine in future.
Annotated My Magazine Front Cover
I have now annotated my magazine front cover to point out the key features and codes and conventions.
Finished College Magazine
This is my completed front cover of my college magazine. I have use Adobe Photoshop Element to edit in the titles and text. I also used Adobe to edit in the Vale logo to make it personal to school and add in a barcode to stick to some codes and conventions.

Using Flickr
I have made a Flickr account in order to help me decide which photo is the best one for the front cover of a future magazine I'll produce! I can upload my 3 best photos (the ones I think are best) and ask other people in my media group or my friends which photo they thinkwould look best on the cover of another magazine! It will be good for me to get a second opinion to make future magazine the best I possibly can and I will know others like it too, thanks to the help of Flickr.
Magazines that caught my eye
All these Mojo magazines caught my eye for one reason or another!
The Mojo magazine titled 'Hendrix' caught my eye as the background is metallic and it looked unusual especially with the artist in black and white against the metallic background.
The magazine titled 'the stones' caught my attention because it was strongly themed around the circus, there were many bright colours which really drew me to them!
The magazine titled 'the best' in the middle grabbed my attention because there was only 3 main colours used, black, white and gold. Black and gold are strong colours so really made this magazine stand out.
The magazine titled 'pink floyd' stood out to me because there is a lot of green! It especially stood out because of the way the green fades in!
It is very obvious that Mojo has a clear house style. the same font, in the same style and the colour is usually white but black if its on a white back ground.

Rejection of Images
I did not choose this image because again the model looks very blurry and the photo is not good quality at all, therefore wouldn't look good on the cover. |
I chose not to use this photo because I don't like the way the light hits her face. |
Selection of Image
These images are the three best images I took for the front cover of the magazine. The reason I chose these as my three best photos is because my model looks natural and as though she's an average college student. The photo's are not blurry and have reasonably good lighting. All the shots are medium close up shots.
I like this photo too because the model looks happy like she's enjoying being at college, it looks like a nice environment to study in for the cover of my magazine. |
This photo is not blurry or with bad lighting, the model doesn't look at the camera making it a very natural looking picture. |

My favourite Genre
My favourite genre is rock, therefore when I'm buying a music magazine I look for a black, busy magazine with rugged looking people as the main image. Such as this Kerrang magazine featuring Blink-182.
Whereas this Q magazine featuring Adele is soft looking, she has resonably soft makeup and the background is not busy like a rock magazine would be. Therefore I would not pick this magazine up because it doesn't relate to the codes and conventions I usually see on a rock front cover.
Steve Neale said 'Genres are about spectators-text relationships', I agree with this because genres define what you're reading, so I can specifically choose a magazine all about what I want to read and not music I'm not all that I'm interested in.

Photography plans; cover of magazine
I want the main image of my magazine to scream college student!
Hopefully all the location, clothes&make-up and accessories will all result in a indexical sign for a college student going about college life.
Accessories
The main thing I associate college students with is young people carrying notebooks in their hands, therefore I want my model to be carrying notebooks. I'd also like them to have a backpack on as that's also very iconic to a college student. They will have a wrist watch and a small pair of earrings, nothing too extravagant.Clothes&Make-up
The model will be wearing casual clothes but not too casual, the colour of the clothes will be pretty basic either black and white or primary colours, this way I can prevent any clashes with the rest of the cover, like the masthead or the cover lines. The model will not have a great deal of make up on but will definitely have some on.Location
I have a few idea's on where to shoot the photo's, I want it to be very plain like a white wall so I could edit in a plain coloured background or anything I like. Possibly the model sat under or stood around a tree to resemble a student walking between lessons or even studying outside.Hopefully all the location, clothes&make-up and accessories will all result in a indexical sign for a college student going about college life.

Q Magazine
This front cover of this issue of Q magazine really stands out to me due to the fact a fire is exploding from the mouth of the person in the main image, the fire also has a picture of the rest of the band with in the flames. The masthead is simple the letter 'Q' in white font on a red background (no clashes) on the left where the masthead is usually situated. The buzz word 'Exclusive' is used on the top right hand corner. The cover lines are unrelated to the main feature but will still be featured in the magazine.
Mise en Scène:
The artist looks modern and not old fashioned to suit the sort of music they produce. Shot on a plane background to make it stand out against the background of the magazine. It's not a busy background so you're drawn to the main focus.
Semiotics:
The fire exploding from the mouth of the main artist suggests to me that the band is 'hot' this is an iconic semiotic , meaning the in thing, like a hot new band. It implies they're modern and new, not old or boring.the bands music is most likely the in thing hence why they're the cover and this is shown in the picture. The fire is also symbolic in this medium close up shot, as it is aggressive.

First Thoughts/ Response to Brief
The music I listen to is not music from the charts, I like different types of Rock such as Alternative Rock and Punk Rock. My favourite band is Blink-182, I like other bands such as Sum 41 and Angels and Airwaves as well. Sometimes I listen to rap music too mainly from artists such as Drake but sometimes Kanye West, however I don't listen to rap nearly as much as I do rock music.
